    Dev Watercooler #1 - Laws

    By Demosthenes

As a nation simulation game, one of the biggest aspects the development team has to focus on is the implementation of some sort of law system. This is where most of the potential for nation customization happens; where you can, at your leisure, be a militant dictator, a benevolent monarch, or anything else you wish to be as leader of your nation. PT Alpha's law system reflected that decently well -- laws were numerous and diverse, and had relatively small effects on your nation that could rapidly build up to make you an economic powerhouse, a sprawling utopia, or a swiftly-dwindling nation of oppressed citizens that were doing everything they could to get out. But, at its core, the Alpha system was fairly simplistic. You had a set list of laws, your chances of passing any given law were purely based on how much of a majority you had in your government, and each law's effects were fixed and uniform for every nation that passed them. For the most part, all of the top nations passed the exact same laws. For Beta, we wanted something that had more depth and felt a bit more organic so each nation could be different without sacrificing customizability. ---------- With Beta's law system, every nation has three graduated scales: Foreign Policy: Interventionist - Isolationist
    Economy: Capitalist - Socialist
    Social Freedom: Authoritarian - Libertarian
Each law passed affects your nation's place on one (or more) of these scales; so (for example) as you pass more socialist laws, your nation becomes more socialist. Laws whose values resemble your nation's will be easier to pass than those that do not -- which means it will be easier to pass multiple laws on one end of the scale. As an example, let's pretend my nation is far to the Authoritarian side of the Social Freedom scale. If I wanted to pass another law that resembled the ones my nation is known for -- say, pervasive government surveillance -- it would be considerably more likely to pass than, say, a law allowing freedom of speech. The impact of your nation's scale doesn't stop at just passing your laws, though. The impact each law has on your nation is modified by how closely it matches your nation's policies as a whole -- so even if I somehow managed to pass that freedom of speech law, its effect on my nation's stats would be significantly diminished compared to its effect in a nation that is typically libertarian. ---------- Government types in Alpha were never really touched. Every nation was a Democracy (though as far as mechanics went this meant basically nothing), and there was no way to change it. Clearly, this tied into laws -- so we decided to integrate the two. Any nation will be allowed to attempt to change its government type to one of four options: Democracy, Republic, Oligarchy, or Autocracy. Your government type will affect how you pass laws. Direct Democracy: All citizens vote on each law. Instead of holding elections for representatives and attempting to gain seats in a parliament, your chances of passing laws will depend on your citizens (and how happy their are with your rule).
Republic: Will function as it did in Alpha. Elections may be held up to once every 3 days to determine seats in Parliament; your chances of passing a law will depend on how many seats you control.
Oligarchy: Instead of elected officials, you have a council made up of self-interested oligarchs. You may gain influence over them by funneling some amount of your tax income to them, and -- like the number of Parliament seats for a Republic -- your amount of influence will determine how easy it is to pass laws. The percent of your tax income that you use to bribe your council members may be changed at most once every 3 days.
Autocracy: You have supreme rule over your nation. Any law you attempt to pass (including changing government type) will succeed, but your nation will suffer significant happiness and growth penalties. Additionally, any laws you pass while an Autocracy have a chance of being automatically repealed when changing back to a different form of government.
Attempting to change your government type will consume your ability to pass a law for the day. Additionally, you may not change your government type for 3 days after calling an election (if you are currently a Republic) or changing your bribe amount (if Oligarchy). It is our hope that this system will reduce the amount of cookie-cutter nations we saw all too often in Alpha, by creating multiple viable paths and encouraging nations to form their government and policies as they wish.

    Silistrious Forever!

    We are strong today!

    We march alongside Victory!

    Forever strong!

We will show us the strength!

    From the light of Democracy!

    Our nation stays pure!

    A beacon of hope!

    In a sea of horror!

    Silistrious forever and a day!

Here is a speech by Grand Chancellor Varspasian,

"A great man had died recently. A good friend to Silistrious. The leader of Oceania will be remember by all nations as a beacon of progress."

Silistrious has recently began working on a 10 meter high statue commemorating the achievements of the Oceanic Leader Charles. It will be given to the nation of Oceania when completed. A duplicate, measuring at 4 meters will be kept by Silistrious and placed in the presidential garden, alongside other Silistrian presidents. Where very few statues of non-silistrians reside.

In other news, Here is another speech by Varspasian,

"...a beacon of democracy had closed its doors recently, the Homari news network CNC. Not only was it very popular in Homar, but as well in Silistrious and many parts of the world. It is sad to see such a sound defender of the truth to go."

In more other news, despite the best efforts between the diplomats between Orellia and Silistrious, war had been declared. 50,000 Orellian troops stormed the border at dawn this morning.

In response to the attack, Varspasian has given his last speech.

"Silistrians! We will win this dishonorable war! The Orellian foe will not suceed in defeating us! We will fight them in the air, we will fight them on the sea, on the land, and if need be, in space itself! Hold your ground brave citizens! Hold it and do not let Orellia gain even a mere milimeter of Silistrian ground! Silistrious now! Silistrious-- forever!

After the speech, the Grand Chancellor had stated to a SSNN interviewer that he will not be making any more public speeches for quite some time, so he can focus on the war.

    And finally,

    Good day.

  2. Anderson Palmer: Over the past 280 days, Roundup on CNC has been dedicated to providing you with quality coverage of Homari news events nearly every single day. Since its beginning it has been our pleasure to work with you, to report for you and to inform you. We have continued every single day to bring that news to your screens, and unfortunately, those days must and have come to a end. A look at where we started, here's our first ever segment.

    (PLAY VIDEOTAPE)

Anderson Palmer: Good evening Homar, you're watching Daily Recap for Thursday July 22nd on CNC.

Kevin Stamper: Your job under threat? Could be a plausible worry as the Congress passes the Open Borders Act, illegally thrashing this nation's dedicated, hard working workforce with immigrants who mooch off welfare. Congress's anti-Homar streak continues to show, and President Reberbio should answer to this farce of legislation, for it could literally kill jobs, and kill families. This is why Congress has a all time low 55 percent approval rating, and the President has a 49 percent approval rating. The defense of CNC, is the Homar Constitution. The President should show some defense for the 600 thousand citizens he promised to defend.

Emily Stewart: That's nonsense, you're just anti-immigration due to your desire to keep your nation pure.

    Kevin Stamper: Never said that.

Nina Lestuwaki: Anyway, in a emergency session of the Federal Reserve, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve announced a new 1.5 percent interest rate, which is a 0.2 percent increase from 1.3, his former rate. Anderson, your take?

Anderson Palmer: Well, the Chairman is clearly attempting to round in inflation, which has been going at 2.5 percent this quarter, a mile away from the 1.25 percent the FED wanted.

Emily Stewart: It is expected today, that the President will bring to the floor of the Congress a new bill to deregulate the private sector completely, and it is expected to pass. Your company at threat? More tomorrow.

    (END VIDEOTAPE)

Anderson Palmer: And that was when the show was called Daily Recap. Through the near year we've been reporting, we've been reporting tremendous things and have helped impirnt events into the history books of the future due to our informative news. One of those events was our coverage of the 8/14 terrorist attacks. Here's a clip from our reporting then.

    (PLAY VIDEOTAPE)

Nina Lestuwaki: This is CNC's Roundup, as we continue our coverage of the recent terrorist attack at the Center for Disease Prevention Headquarters. For more live coverage, we go to Anderson Palmer right outside the blastzone. Anderson, for those just joining us, what's going on?

Anderson Palmer: Well Nina, absolute disaster. Sixty already declared dead, more then two hundred injured. It was a quiet afternoon at around 1:20 PM in downtown Lublin, when a massive explosion was felt and heard. The entire front of the building then proceeded to collapse at around 1:56 PM. There is panic on the streets, and crowds have already gathered at the CDP Headquarters for quick prayer and mourning. Between those 36 minutes from impact to collapse, Homar has seen their most heroic citizens act up in defense of their fellow man and woman. You can bet we'll be covering this story for the rest of the day, and many more.

    (END VIDEOTAPE)

Anderson Palmer: Where there's been conflict, we've been there from the attacks on the Oceanic embassy to war with Homar for the first time in its history. We've been where others could not, and we have been glad to report for those who could not. Ladies and gentlemen, it's a sad night tonight that Roundup is ending, but we have no doubt that in the future this short setback will only be replaced by more innovative and more effective ways to providing what is going on around you right to you in your living room. After the break, for the last time, the news.

  3. January contained a total of 10 legislative sessions, beginning with the 61st that began on 1 January 2015 and culminated in the 70th session that began on 30 January and continued into early February. The MDP won all 10 elections held during January securing an average of 455 seats during that time. Despite the fact that the MDP only twice had a majority of less than 210, the Bundeskammer passed only five of the 28 pieces of legislation debated during January. Ultimately the Bundeskammer passed the Equality in Sports Act with the support of 471 Bundeskammer Delegates, the Subsidisation of Research Act with the support of 293 BDs, the Unemployment Benefits Act with the support of 315 BDs, the Exotic Animal Containment Act supported by 314 BDs and finally the Subsidised Housing Act with the support of 319 BDs.

Politik von Heute's political correspondent Katja Egner gave her views on the possible reasons for the government suffering backbench revolts of up to 325 members of the ruling party:

If you look at the legislative programme that President Neibig has advocated throughout January it is focused to a large extent on increased environmental regulations, transport funding and government accountability and transparency. While the repeated rejection of the Freedom of Information Bill cannot be explained in this way, the repeated and overwhelming rejection of new environmental regulations proposed in the Green Preservation Bill or the changes to transport funding proposed by either the Congestion Charge Implementation Bill or the Public Transport (Local Devolution) Bill could be attributed to a concern amongst more moderate MDP backbenchers of the political implications of more public spending and increased government regulations particularly considering that the government has been stung by criticism of peoples take-home pay falling every month since the Bundesstatistikamt first published monthly figures in September 2014. Concern about increasing population density even in rural areas is likely to have spurred the rejection of the Green Preservation Bill which many Bundeskammer Delegates see as a further barrier to providing adequate amounts of housing stock for a growing population. if you look at the legislation that did pass in January all of the bills were seen to have a far greater social or public benefit than most of the bills that were rejected.

At 3 PM (NST) on 1 February 2015 the Bundesstatistikamt (Federal Statistics Office) released the latest national statistics. The economic index (NWIX) rose 17.58 points (7.89%) to 240.41, the social index (SoWeiX) rose just 5.51 points (3.3%) with the National production index (NHIX) rising by a much more significant 30.33 points (11.86%). The national development index (NFIX) which is compiled from the other three indices rose 16.4 points (7.75%).

Population growth during January totalled 1.01 million or 23.53%; the first time monthly growth exceeded 1 million people. the total population on 1 February 2015 was therefore 5.3 million. Population growth accelerated to 37,200 people per day but despite these increasing population growth figures, population density actually fell as land purchases increased the national territory by 669 km² (27.66%) representing the highest monthly total for territorial expansion.

The NWIX's growth was driven by GDP growth of nearly €41 billion and the creation of over 750,000 during January. The index's growth was however held back by an extra 253,700 people being registered unemployed pushing the national unemployment rate from 7.71% in January to 11.02% in February, the NWIX was also held back by average annual incomes and GDP per worker figures falling by over €2900 during the month. Coupled with the rising unemployment this meant that GDP per capita fell almost €5000 during January.

All five of the metrics used to calculate the social index (SoWeiX) improved to some degree during January with crime rates falling from 4.17% to 4.13%, disease rates falling by 0.34% to 5.26%, literacy rates improved from 92.95% to 92.97% while population happiness reached 59.47% and life expectancy grew by five weeks to nearly 71 years.

Growth in national resource output was driven for the most part by increases in the production of unrefined construction materials and fuel, rising by 33.26% and 98.24% respectively. Further index growth was driven by a 17.65% increase in the output of refined foodstuffs and a 10% increase in refined fuel. The net output of milk (milk not used for refining) fell 75% to just 70l per day, representing the lowest daily output on record. following record increases in lumbar output during December, the output of lumber remained static during January at 10,800 t per day.

As with previous statistics announcements people at all points on the political spectrum were trying to showcase by the statistics supported their own view or discredited the ideas of political opponents. Doreen Kästner (PKN Economy and Employment Spokesperson) spoke to ARN TV's evening news programme Tagesschau:

These month's figures once again just showcases the MDP's economic failures; yes the economy has grown but it's grown by the third lowest figure on record despite the fact that the country has a workforce that is almost 3 times the size of the time period of the next worst GDP growth figure. Unemployment has reached an acceptably high proportions with almost one in nine people out of work and the claimant count exceeding the total population of the country's three largest urban areas. This was despite the fact another that another 4100 pointless jobs were created in the public sector. Once again the President's economic policy has done nothing to support wages which fell by the second largest amount on record.

Minister of State for Finance Irene Thaler (MDP) retaliated when interviewed on ZNF TV's evening news programme Rückblick saying:

In case the PKN still hadn't noticed the growth of the country's private sector and therefore the bulk of the employment growth experienced by the country is highly cyclical and is by no means certain that this unemployment rate which I agree is excessively high will not be reduced by future private sector growth caused by greater workforce availability. She [Kästner] criticised 4100 new public sector jobs as being pointless. I ask anybody watching, since when has the security of the country's supply of food, fuel or construction materials been a pointless activity? It is the MDP not the PKN that is securing the country's vital national interests and for some reason the PKN needs this explaining to them every single month. The PKN has once again sidestepped the other key statistic about public sector employment; their ideological hatred of the public sector would surely welcome the fact that the share of public sector employment relative to the total workforce is at the lowest level on record having fallen to just 1.27% from over 1.4% in January. the creation of new public sector jobs to support a growing private sector economy would surely be acceptable to any sensible political party but as we know from months of experience the PKN has no credible or coherent policy platform just continuous complaining from the sidelines. once again the PKN has managed to completely ignore the universally positive figures relating to the country's social welfare with the country being shown to be happier, safer, healthier and better educated than ever before as a result of the MDP's socially responsible policies rather than the PKN's destructive ideology driven only by personal greed and private profit.

On 3 February the Minister of State for Trade, Felix Meyer (MDP) delivered the monthly trade statement to the Bundeskammer, responding to the two set questions used every month. When asked what the government foreign trade policy was the Minister of State responded saying:

It continues to be the case that the government will prioritise domestic need for indigenous resources over exports, the government endeavours to remain entirely self-sufficient in terms of food and fuel supply and to the greatest possible extent in terms of construction materials.

He then proceeded to detail the export and import figures for January:

Exports during January were primarily construction materials which totalled over €1.7 billion worth of lumber, and over €767 million worth of timber. These exports combined with a small amounts of crude oil and petrol which was also exported resulted in total export income of almost €2.572 billion for January, total imports cost just €160,000. consequently the country's trade balance is once again positive to the tune of €1.866 billion. The trade surplus for January is almost €83 million per day and amounts to putting an extra 8.5% on people's income tax.

Construction resources have stayed consistent for the most part, while the primary resources have averaged around $2,000.00, timber (TB) has slipped down to $1,200.00 per ton. Lumber (LB) and bricks (BK) have kept a steady price around $4,200.00, but due to the exhausting of several gravel quarries, concrete (CN) is selling for $5,000.00 contrary to the $3,500.00 it was priced at last week.

Energy resources have been up and down this week, as a lack of buyers have forced countries to undercut each other in prices, resulting in an all time low of natural gas (NG), priced at $950.00, as more and more nations are extracting this clean and valuable resource. Crude oil (CO) has maintained a selling point average at $4,500.00, only to be undercut by an offer of $525.00 dollars per barrel. Many nations have been buying coal (CL) due to the increase in coal fueled power plants, driving the price up to about $8,000.00 dollars per ton. The price of coke coal (CC) maintained a high of $10,500.00 per ton, only to be undercut by an offer $5,250.00 per ton. The liquified natural gas (LN) market has been flooded with a cheap imported version due to new manufacturing techniques, that allow for natural gas to be refined very quickly and cheaply, resulting in an all time low at about $1,750.00 . The petroleum (PT) market has followed the crude oil market very closely, due to a new increase in refineries. It suddenly dropped sharply, bringing it down from a high of $5,000.00, to an average of $1,500.00 .

While livestock (LV) and wheat (WT) have kept a steady price of $2,250.00 , a strike of wheat farmers has made bread (BD) the most scarce resource of all, with a total of 16,100 loaves on the market at a whopping $104,000.00 per loaf. Dairy products (DP) have been priced at an average of $6,000.00 with meat (MT) not far behind at $5,000.00 per ton. According to the World Health Organization, 76.4% of all cows on Terra have mad cow disease, thereby driving the price of milk (MK) up to an average of about $10,000.00 per liter. This has not affected the dairy products market yet, but as we head into the fourth quarter, look out for increasing prices of refined dairy products.

  7. Cipritine Intelligencer back after two-month investigation

    iiB7yRB.jpg?1

Officers of the Vigiles escorted Frumentarii agents as they seized computers and documents from CI headquarters last month.

Following an investigation by the Cohortes Vigiles and the Frumentarii, the Cipritine Intelligencer has returned to active duty. The investigation, which was first commenced on the pretense of alleged links between journalist staff and the Hibernian terror group Laochra an Oileán, was dismissed on Monday by the Magistrate General after having continued for almost two months. Speaking on the matter, the MG's spokesperson cited "insufficient evidence" and "obvious political motives" for the case's dismissal. The Office of the Frumentarii declined our requests for comment.

Meanwhile, the Cohortes Vigiles has been under increasing pressure from the Senate, with an upcoming conduct review in two weeks. Members of the Primacy, including the chairwoman of the Committee on Law Enforcement, Senatrix Octavia Martina, have lent their political support to the Cipritine Intelligencer throughout the investigation process. It remains to be seen whether the Vigiles will face disciplinary action but, for the time being, Primacy senators' responses have been limited to verbal condemnation.

The Emperor, who is currently on a military visit to Hibernia, has not issued any statement on the matter.

An unrelated audit conducted by the Censor's Bureau will continue, having been reviewed and supported by the MG. The audit is investigating alleged tax abuses by accounting staff, and possible stock market trading violations. All staff involved in the audit have been placed on paid leave until the end of investigations.

Kinyodia's Market Watch brought to you by Kinyodia Bakery

This week's top story: After a long run of Lumber and Concrete selling at near five figure premiums, prices have plummeted to nearly a fifth of their long-term averages. Speculators believe the easing and rising cost of construction have contributed to the downfall and predict cheap materials being readily available at reasonable costs for the upcoming weeks. Some nations have taken the opportunity to stock up on materials before the next construction boom.

In other construction news, a freak shortage of timber due to a historically dry season accompanied by wildfires has resulted in a massive supply and logistics nightmare for some nations while others unaffected by the weather are profiting reasonably. Prices are expected to remain high until fall this year.

Energy resources remain at historic lows as nations are becoming more energy independent as abundant supplies and ample extraction remain at above average levels.

World food markets remain reasonable and are expected to maintain their status well into the next quarter. Speculators expect a steady rise in demand as the world population increases and also questions if nations can afford the land and resources to keep their populations fat and happy.

Due to the international moratorium on war and standing armies, military resources are at historic lows and are expected to remain far below historic averages until nations and alliances come to their senses.

Celebrations erupt in Foxburo City today. After much anticipation, it has finally happened. The Senate has passed the Law of The Way earlier this morning. Effectively making President Fox Fire the nation's official monarch.

Fox Fire has stated that all branches of government and the Senate will remain in tact. This latest passed legislation comes after a landslide win in the Senate for Sionnach.

Members of CPRoF have so far declined to comment.

  9. "For Freedom, Glory, and Virtue"

Every citizen in Lost Heroes knows the motto of our country. It's on our money. It's in our government buildings. It's everywhere. But is it true? How free are we?

Early passage of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights garnered a sense of freedom and equality for the citizens of Lost Heroes. Many citizens expected similar laws to be passed very quickly to ensure their rights were protected. But this was not the case. The government took an extended hiatus of freedom laws, and only recently have they been brought to the senate floor again.

President Lost released the following statement about this very issue. "I do regret not putting a stronger emphasis on human rights. I did not assure protection of these rights, and I do so regret not bringing these laws to the senate. However, I have learned from my mistakes, and I promise to the people of Lost Heroes that they will always be free, and that they will always have their government to protect their freedoms."

As such, President Lost aggressively campaigned for a law protecting freedom of the press and universal suffrage, both of which passed.

Opponents of the Equality party criticize the President for his late start campaign for freedom.

"The President is nothing more than just a bunch of talk," an anonymous critic wrote in, "He says all these things about protecting the people and ensuring their freedom, but any smart person knows why he gives these elaborate speeches. He wants more votes! The Equality party's power is slowly diminishing and he's trying to stop it. That's it. He doesn't care about freedom; he cares about power."

In other news, President Lost's education plan has been completed with the building of 3 new universities, several new schools, and the passing of the Enhanced Education Act. Lost Heroes has started buying more land to alleviate high population density.

    Thank you for reading,

    Jessica Faran from Heroes City

  10. Venotian Senate voted to pass the Foreign Investment Inducement Act this week, after several failed attempts. Including last week's singular vote, a total of 5 tries were required with the Act being passed on the 5th attempt. It garnered 339 votes. President Sexton's response to the bill's passage was,

I'm glad we managed to finally pass a bill which should increase our productivity and make us competitive from a foreign standpoint. Our citizens should see the number of jobs skyrocket now that we have incentives for foreign nations to invest.

It is unsure what effects the law has had up to this point, but the President still stands behind the bill.

While the Foreign Investment Inducement Act was the major debate this week, other laws were passed:

    - The Maths and Sciences Outreach Act was passed with a total of 301 votes.

    - The Windfall Tax Act was passed with a total of 287 votes.

    - The Enhanced Education Act was passed with a total of 299 votes.

Federal elections this week only took place once, with the Medial Party beating predictions and taking a gigantic 193 seat Senatorial advantage, while the Worker's Party lost almost all of the contested seats. Said the President of only holding elections once this week,

I firmly believe that our party's majority is in the best interest of the nation at this moment in time. I promise to my citizens that free elections will be held again this month [May]. However, there are some Senators who refuse to vote on even the simplest requirements for our country to run - therefore, I am forced to use a majority when I have one.

Needless to say, there are some Senators from all parties who denounce the President as a despot for refusing to hold elections - especially when the Medial Party holds such a huge Senatorial lead. Senator Bill Poliakoff (Worker's Party) said in a statement,

This is a blatant act of tyranny and I for one cannot believe our citizenry is standing for it. Sexton is clearly in the midst of a power grab. I call on every citizen now to show him what our original goals for the revolution were.

The town of Paví was upgraded from a "town" to a "city" this past week, increasing the number of citizens living there from 10,000 to 50,000. Infrastructure was also upgraded, with the number of clinics increasing as well. In accordance with the increased number of citizens and continued immigration into Venotia, President Sexton bought 40km2 of land to help maintain decent living conditions.

    Dear all,

in fairness to all those who were eager to discover what was going on behind the iron curtains of the G10, i am afraid the answer will be disappointing to you; nothing.

The G10 set out with the noble intent to bring together the (at the time) largest alliances of PT but with time, interest and activity withered. The last signs of (minor) activity were in fact on May 8th. It is understandable that people have more on their mind than merely PT, but the general lack of interest was disappointing.

Close to nothing was actually concluded at the summit, other than some showing how testy they can become.

Despite several attempts to egg on the conference, for the G10 to define itself, and at one point even proposing for it to become a permanent aspect of PT nothing was actually concluded. Poaching was merely reproached, little or no trade and commerce were discussed. There was at one point talk for the creation of a perpetual Inter-Alliance Council (IC) with dedicated forum which would permit more alliances to join and reap of the same benefits, but that's all it was: talk.

I apologise to all those that actually had some expectations for this summit, so did I.

With the recent passing of the Judiciary Act, and the creation of a Criminal Code for Borealia; today marks the beginning of an era of stability and liberty for the United Kingdom, an era where citizens need not fear arbitrary arrest or truly unjust treatment. Though injustice and abuses will exist in the system; as they do in all systems, the King and the Parliament will endeavour to minimize them and to punish the perpetrators.

A statement from the Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie of the Social Credit Party touched on similar issues, "Recently our government had a great upset. When we proposed a simple law that would codify our criminal law and make sure that there would be a certain consistency to the law; that men wouldn't walk away with just a proverbial slap on the wrist for murder, or a poor man wouldn't be punished unduly for stealing a bite to feed himself or his own; it was utterly struck down. I couldn't believe it, it was a slap in the face of our great nation and our reigning monarch. It seems that there are people in our government who wish to block any attempt to stabilize our state, whether from the Old Order, or insane anarchists who wish to thwart responsible governance at every turn. Even though our second attempt at the bill passed, we should still be on watch in case these saboteurs actually exist."

With these two acts, Borealia now has a basic justice system, which is useful as the recently gained settlement at Montreal has increased the strain on government services and as it grows it will need an expansion of those services. A justice system will create part of the basic framework of society that will allow for the efficient and proper distribution of such resources.

  11. The Grand Conglomerate of Hydronium-Energy Producing Individuals was founded on May 28, 2048 in the NS Plane. It was founded when a group of corporations purchased a large swath of land in Ethiopia. Being some of the most religiously free areas in Eastern Africa, a group of Neoaxumites (people wanting to reestablish the long dead nation of Axum) settled in that area.

The early Hydronians (as they were still called) quickly established the religion as Christianity, and quickly performed a coup on Ethiopia. Instead of declaring war, Djibouti and Eritrea applied for ascension into Hydronium. Sudan and Somalia, on the other hand, didn't.

Sudan declared war on Hydronium and South Sudan, trying to purge the new Christian uprisings that were being fueled by the Hydronian and South Sudanese revivals. After many years of war, the new Grand Hydronium defeated Sudan, and took over a swath of territory.

    Map: http://i.imgur.com/duIBR47.png

Undaunted, Somalia convinced Saudi Arabia to sent several troops to crush the "blasphemous abomination that is the Hydroni." Though none of them made it to Hydronium (Islam and Axum have been on good terms since Axum allowed early Muslims to take refuge in the Axumite empire), it made Hydronium decide that an invasion of Somalia was necessary to preserve peace. (This is also the first mention of "Hydroni," and it stuck.)

The Hydroni Invasion of Somalia is agreed to be the first major offensive by the Hydroni. After five years of bloody conflict, the last few troops were that were still standing defected into Hydroni care. This did not come without a price: 100,000 lives were extinguished in the name of progress. The War of the Firsts Memorial still stands in Axum City today.

After this, the Hydroni controlled an area of land from Sudan down to Kenya. It is important to note that the end of the War of the Firsts was also the day that California seceded from the US, shattering the US's reputation and power globally.

    Map: http://i.imgur.com/rfrswSR.png

At this time, seven out of ten people in Hydronium had PTSD from the series of wars that the Hydroni had gone threw. After a large referendum, Khat, a common drug in Hydronium, was legalized. The memories of war dissipated... until the Saudi Arabian Confederation.

After Tanzania and Yemen joined Hydronium, the GAU invaded without warning. The Hydroni were pushed out of Arabia, but then retook that land. They then reached a long and bloody stalemate, until the Hydroni had the most important invention it would make: the 117c NightFighter.

The Nighthawk is considered a failure in this modern day. It had poor camouflage and had absolutely no carrying space or missile systems. In fact, the Hydroni aquired the remaining Nighthawk in an international "Hey, are you gonna eat that?" The Hydroni then went to work, morphing it into a powerful vessel that could be crafted from assembly lines. With a fifteen ton carrying capacity and a 550 mph engine, not to mention reduction of the size of the radio blueprint to the size of a sparrow; this is considered the signature Hydroni marvel.

The Nighthawks overran the GAU, and paved the way for the liberation of Oman and the UAE. A truce was signed, with the GAU having a large empire of it's own.

This was also a moment of great international turmoil. Borders changed like sand flowing from one's hand, but it gave Hydronium a chance for greatness.

    Map: http://i.imgur.com/9oI5i1c.png

The next Epoch of Hydroni history is one of the most interesting parts of Hydroni history. This "First States Period" happened after Sri Lanka/India joined Hydronium. The most powerful nation on earth was the Grand Russ, followed by the Asian Union. The GR annexed the GAU, and the AU took over much of North America. The two states attacked the Deccan Empire (India) from the north, and wore it down to a small Buddhist refugee state in the south. The now panafrican Hydronium created the entire Buddhist Third (or state) for it. After that, the entire Hydroni empire was divided into three sections: the Christian, Muslim, and Buddhist Thirds.(Israel was added as a semi-autonomous region)

Hydronium finally was a superpower, but among a council of them.

    Map: http://i.imgur.com/kLdjmhi.png

The next thirty years nearly killed humanity. An airborne strain of the Ebola virus began to spread amongst the Triumvirate. It crippled the northern two, but the Hydroni had already been through Ebola attacks, and knew how to survive. It is thought that without the pandemic, Hydronium would have been devoured.

The Hydroni took over most of the unused areas. The Hydroni emerged as the world's superpower, and as the pandemic stopped, the Hydroni grew.

The last case of Ebola from the pandemic was cured on January 21, 2115.

    Map: http://i.imgur.com/b7ygO7N.png

On December 31, 2199, the Hydroni had conquered the globe. After this, modified NightFighters with alcubierre drives made contact with other nations (like the Vaxonian), and became a powerful interstellar nation. It took a dwarf galaxy, and it is thought that there may still be PFT Hydroni in that galaxy.

But what comes up must come down...

PART TWO: THE SHATTERING OF THE HYDRONI IS COMING SOON!

    ----------

With Beta's law system, every nation has three graduated scales:

    • Foreign Policy: Interventionist - Isolationist
    • Economy: Capitalist - Socialist
    • Social Freedom: Authoritarian - Libertarian

    ----------

Government types in Alpha were never really touched.

    • Direct Democracy: All citizens vote on each law. Instead of holding elections for representatives and attempting to gain seats in a parliament, your chances of passing laws will depend on your citizens (and how happy their are with your rule).
    • Republic: Will function as it did in Alpha. Elections may be held up to once every 3 days to determine seats in Parliament; your chances of passing a law will depend on how many seats you control.
    • Oligarchy: Instead of elected officials, you have a council made up of self-interested oligarchs. You may gain influence over them by funneling some amount of your tax income to them, and -- like the number of Parliament seats for a Republic -- your amount of influence will determine how easy it is to pass laws. The percent of your tax income that you use to bribe your council members may be changed at most once every 3 days.
    • Autocracy: You have supreme rule over your nation.

    KPop by numbers

Often times I talk about the "Big 3" companies (referring to SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment), but what does that really mean in terms of numbers? Sure Korean media regards them as the "Big 3", even building an American Idol style show around the idea that each company would provide a judge, training and prizes. That should be good enough for us, but just in case it isn't, let's look at the numbers:

Total Album Sales 2012 by Company

    28% - SM Entertainment

    15% - YG Entertainment

    6% - Woolim Entertainment

    5% - Cube Entertainment

    5% - FNC Entertainment

    ...

    3% - JYP Entertainment

    3% - Core Contents Media

    ...

SM Entertainment certainly proves their dominance here and YG Entertainment secures its spot in the "Big 3". What might be surprising, though, is that YG Entertainment isn't at the top of the list. After all, PSY is one of their artists and Gangnam Style took the world by storm, becoming one of the highest selling singles last year. SM Entertainment, however, has some of the most consistently top performing groups in KPop, but we'll talk more about them later. JYP Entertainment's lackluster showing should come as a huge surprise, but looking back at 2012, the company was fairly quiet and really only has a few active groups promoting. Woolim's third place performance is mostly driven by the huge success of INFINITE, a very popular boy group that debuted relatively recently.

SM Entertainment Album Sales 2012 by Artist

    34% - Super Junior

    22% - TVXQ

    13% - SHINee

    9% - EXO

    9% - Girls' Generation TTS

    6% - Girls' Generation

    5% - f(x)

    2% - BoA

Super Junior has proven itself to be quite possibly the most popular boy group in Korea, with 34% of SM's Album sales, they managed to sell 10% of all albums KPop albums sold in Korea in 2012. TVXQ and SHINee come in second and third, not surprising for the still very popular groups. What's most surprising in this list is Girls' Generation's performance. The popular girl group didn't hold any Korean promotions in 2012 nor did they release any Korean albums, yet they still managed to grab 6% of sales while their subunit TTS took 9% of sales on its own.

YG Entertainment Album Sales 2012 by Artist

    50% - Big Bang

    26% - G-Dragon

    12% - PSY

    4% - 2NE1

    3% - Epik High

    2% - GD & TOP

    2% - SE7EN

It is clear that Big Bang is YG Entertainment's most popular group, selling half of the companies albums on its own. Add to this the fact that G-Dragon and GD & TOP are really subunits of Big Bang, and you start to see why the company seems to focus on this boy group: Almost 80% of its albums sold are from Big Bang. Psy's record setting success is not very apparent from the domestic sales numbers, only selling 12% of YG Entertainment's albums. An interesting figure to look at is that Psy sold barely more albums than Girls' Generation did, but less than the subunit TTS.

JYP Entertainment Album Sales 2012 by Artist

    36% - Wooyoung

    19% - MissA

    17% - Wonder Girls

    11% - Jo Kwon

    9% - 2PM

    7% - JJ Project

    1% - JYP

Notice that this list doesn't include the other half of One Day, 2AM. JYP groups were fairly inactive in 2012. Wonder Girls's leader got married and moved to Canada. 2PM and 2AM focused on solo activities (as evidenced by Wooyoung and Jo Kwon's appearances). One continual criticism of JYP Entertainment is that JYP himself is still active and always promoting himself. Fans sometimes feel this distracts him from properly promoting his artists.

    ---

So, ok, all these statistics are for Korea. What about overseas promotions? Girls' Generation was really active in Japan last year, as were several other groups. Unfortunately, there is no good/easy way to get data about worldwide popularity. We do, however, have an interesting statistic courtesy of Psy's Gentleman MV. The video passed 24 million views just 24 hours after release and here is where the viewers from that first day were from:

    15.7% - USA

    14.8% - South Korea

    5.84% - Brazil

    4.15% - Mexico

    4.01% - Canada

    3.14% - France

    3.00% - United Kingdom

    2.81% - Taiwan

    2.73% - Vietnam

    2.43% - Malaysia

    ---

That's all well and good, but are sales and views the only ways to measure popularity? Not in the least and especially not in poll addicted South Korea. Earlier this year the research firm Leespiar asked 1332 men and women between 13 and 69 years old who the most popular celebrities in Korean were.

Lee Seung Gi topped the male chart with 9.2%, Psy followed closely with 8.5%. The rest of the list consisted of: Big Bang, Lee Seung Chul, SHINee, Kim Bum Soo, INFINITE, Suing Shi Kyung, Huh Gak and K.Will. While Super Junior may have sold the most albums, they didn't appear on this list even though rival Big Bang did.

As for the female list, Girls' Generation made it to the top with 20.6%. Baek Ji Young, IU, SISTAR, Jang Yoon Jung, Lee Hyori, BoA, Park Jung Hyun, Ailee and Lee Hi finished out the chart.

  14. I'm going to mainly see what kind of replies I get and generate a discussion that way, but I figured I'd at least give a reason FOR replies.

With the recent death of Venezeulan dictator Hugo Chávez, I decided to go and read various news sources to see what the reporting style would be like in the United States, and yes, even abroad.

At first I thought it'd be something akin to "Viva Venezuela, Viva Libertad," you know, some variation. But I was actually sort of surprised to see that outlets like CNN and MSNBC had a slight praise for him. Okay, not *so* surprised, but still. I read a really good "iReport" article written by a supposed Venezuelan immigrant in the United States: Read Here. And was hopeful it was written by CNN its self, but obviously it wasn't.

The problem I've noticed with the media in this country is that they either only report the things as they want to report them or they report nothing at all. So in many cases, people like myself have to go through various sources to see and read the things that we want to know. For example, I like to read BBC and CBC as well as Reuters, Associated Press and Fox News. I primarily visit CNN on my phone because the other mobile sites for their rival organisations either suck terribly or the content loads slow. So, I at least get my CNN quota.

I've found that the BBC typically seems to have the most balanced and informative news, which to me is sometimes odd because I know that allegedly the BBC is controlled by the British government/Crown, and you'd expect the information to be slanted. And I've found rare cases of that being true.

If I spend a half hour watching Fox News, I'll only get the conservative republican view with some attempts at presenting an alternative view, but just that -- attempts. If I spend a half hour watching MSNBC I'll get nothing but extreme liberal views that sometimes make me wonder if MSNBC is controlled by a foreign government that hates the United States, but hey? If I spent that same amount of time watching CNN I'd get a fair mix of liberal democrat and conservative republican with a film covered style of reporting; you hear and see the news, but learn nothing of substance.

That one article written by that Venezeulan was probably the most informative thing that I've seen on CNN in any format in the last few months, and it really made me wonder how it is that someone whom is not a professional reporter can be so informative when the professional reporters present the news in such a way that their own agendas and coporate overhead is completely unfiltered and naked for all to see... but, then I remember, this is America and big business owns the major media outlets and they report the news in the way that their owners ideologically swing.

I think it's time to go back to reading news papers or listening to radio for myself. After all, nothing beats the feeling of opening a news paper and reading the stories the old fashioned way -- that is supposing you don't once again run into the same corporate malaise that you deal with from the television... such a pipe dream.

  15. My 4th entry. I was inspired so I decided to paint something game-wise. Any suggestions, feedback, whatever please.

[02:06] <Kadin> I love how Niota tries to be such a cool kid these days because he knows a couple people who dislike me. Its actually really funny.

Citizenkane - Providing journalistic nutrition of the Kadin variety to the Project Terra community since 2012

  17. It's been a long while since my last entry. I've been busy with life. Things have happened, things have gone by. I've learned a few things while PT has been gone. I'm still however, a kissless, non-fapping virgin that goes on the internet, however. I've been quite busy with school. I'm in my senior year of high school and things have been a blast so far.

I honestly am nervous about Project-Terra starting back up. As you know, I've got some...issues with the community. Hopefully they will be fixed when Terra starts up. Hopefully I can revive TFE for....the third time now?

Moving on from Project-Terra, a lot of you know I am trying to get into game development. It's still caressing unbelievably hard. Things I have done so far:

    • Got Autodesk Mudbox to finally work, maybe I can now make Ultra-High-poly models.
    • Bake Normal Maps
    • Make Edge Loops in 3DS Max
    • Found a good gun tutorial, will follow later

There's probably more, but I can't remember stuff. Now, for real life. I have gotten accepted into two colleges! Each one is offering me scholarships that are very useful. Hopefully I can manage to get a full-ride, as my money situation is very very dire right now! That's it for now though.

    Merry Christmas!

    -John

It is good to be back in the excitement of PT.

Here's a thoughtfull poem for my good friend, the Terra Leaker.

    Mr. Terra Leaker,

You say that I am a dweeb picking a fight against a bully/

Well, how can I pick a fight against the bully when the bully himself wouldn't reveal his identity.

Is it possible that the bully really is a pusy/

Or is it possible that the bully is a pusy because he's afraid people like me will beat him cruelly/

Take that hood away from your face and reveal who you really are/

Are you afraid that widdoo bad-ass will end up with a cracked nose

    and a scar/

Resting on top of his forehead/

Starting this beef because of a bored thread/

Son, Im going to blast you off to another dimension, as your girl is all bored in her bed/

And after Im done with her, she starts exclaiming I have a larger dick than yours

As I stamp the word "lovely person" on her head/

This war between Scratch Screen and I was going to happen, Terra Leaker or not/

Either way, your mask shouts "ScratchScreen", you'll be a poor usage but necessary

candidate on my future war slot/

By the time you start bowing down to your knees and exclaim peace

Your new name will be "my son"/

Put a condom and stretch it over your head

If you're going to act like a dick

might as well dress like one/

BUT WAIT, THERE'S ONE MORE RHYME/ THAT WILL IGNITE THE FIGHT/ AND LEAVE A WOUND OVER TERRA LEAKER'S HEAD, CALL THAT MY PUNCHLINE/

    By the way,

    This is you as TerraLeaker

    http://s16.postimage...nown_person.jpg

This is you when I strip you from your mask/

This is you once Im done with you, asshat/

You were probably wondering what will Jemmm bring to Terra from Troll Order hmm, He has put a lot into this new sophisticated alliance which will put Terra into shock.

You may say hmmm why choose it's allies and choose it's members though invitation, Troll Order has standards and wants the best and only the best. TO's foreign policy is very distinctive, strict and non engaging. As the would of Terra progresses you will began to see how greatly effective TO's policies are.

TO's theme goes with multiple based colors such as red, green, gray, and black these colors signify the power of TO's future contributions.

TO is working hard to keep relations strong with the great alliance Terra-Grata, and soon another newly created alliance will be joining our relations which will be creating a Bloc TG, TO, ?? which will create the Titan Bloc.

TO is an alliance that does not look only for Trolls, It is not troll based. If you are affected negatively from a TO member please understand the TO government will not stop the minor crisis.
